Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

Are you healthy? The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease. Knowing this, can you truly declare yourself healthy? You could be walking around feeling fine, but it does not mean that you are in good health.

Importance of Having a Healthy Lifestyle

Many people are quick to dismiss their own health. As if they are machines that can be repaired and given new parts, they go on with their lives not thinking of the consequences. Are you like this? Do you put importance to the maintenance of a healthy lifestyle? Well, if you do not, then you have to realize just how important it is to do so:

  • If you are healthy, you are free from disease or illness, which means you can live your life to the fullest. You can engage in all kinds of activities, without worrying if your body is capable to do it, and will generally have a good quality of life.
  • If you are healthy, that means you are in good shape. You will be in your desired weight and you will feel good about yourself. Feeling good about one’s self makes a person happy. It teaches a person to be more appreciative of what he or she has.
  • Being healthy also ensures a balanced life. A truly healthy human being will live a full life that is free from all kinds of complications, be it from his emotional life, spiritual life, social life and even mental state.

How to be Healthy

The first step to being healthy is your willingness to do what it takes to be in good shape. If you want to be healthy, you will live a healthy lifestyle, and that entails the following:

  • Eat healthy. You are what you eat, so if you want to be healthy, then you have to start a habit of eating healthy, and that means a balanced diet composed of all the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients that the body needs in order to function efficiently.
  • Exercise regularly. You exercise not only to watch your weight, but also so that you can cleanse your body of toxins, through sweating. It will also improve blood circulation and keep your heart healthy. You have to remember that the heart is a muscle and by exercising it, you keep it strong, and healthy.
  • Avoid stress and relax. Work is important but you have to know how to take a break and relax. A person who is stressed is more susceptible to disease. Therefore, take some time to pause for a while and enjoy life.
  • See the doctor regularly. A lot of diseases do not manifest recognizable symptoms. Early detection of diseases usually saves a person, and more importantly, prevention is better than cure. By seeing the doctor regularly, you learn to combat disease and early signs of diseases are detected.

The Different Aspects of Health

Health is measured by looking at a person’s life and assessing his situation in terms of his physical health, mental health, social health, environmental health and spiritual health. It is only when these five aspects are satisfied can a person declare himself truly healthy.
