How to Become an Effective Parent

Parenting is a job, some people want it and some just find the responsibility on their laps. Some people will be blessed with the innate ability to raise a child, but there will be those who will not know what to do. Parenting is not exactly a job that people apply for, but it is a job just the same. As a parent, you should be prepared for the work that you have to do, and you have to understand how important your job is.

Making parenting fun

All kinds of work is hard and if you view parenting as a task that was unfortunately slapped onto your belt, then you will be in trouble. Parenting is hard but it does not have to be too difficult. There are so many things you can do to make parenting a little interesting, and even fun, for your own good. First of all, you have to start working with your partner as a unit. Strong parenting is one that is facilitated by two people, the mother and the father, and you can make it easy on the both of you if you learn to work as a team. You can also incorporate games and prizes in learning and disciplining. You can pose challenges for your children to take, whom you will reward in the end, if they meet success, and you should find creative ways to illustrate some teachings into them.

Important parenting tips

As a first time parent, it is normal for you to not know what to do. Actually, you may be on your way to a third child, and still be totally clueless.  Parenting is a continuous learning process and you have to be open to learn, if you want to be good at it.

To set you up on your way, here are some useful tips:

  • The first years of the child are going to be important because these are their formative years. If you want to raise them a certain way, you have to start as early as possible, so that you can give them a stronger foundation. Repairing a child is going to be a harder job, so start when they are young, and save yourself a lot of time and effort in the future.
  • Do not be afraid to discipline your child. Allow them to recognize the difference between right and wrong and teach them about the consequences of wrongdoings. Do not be afraid to punish, as long as you have a reasonable cause, but make sure to explain your decisions to your child.
  • Be consistent and do not waver. You cannot say something and express something that will conflict with what you previously declared. Be consistent and do not change your decisions. If you want your children to take you seriously, you have to show them who is in charge.

Different parenting styles

Every parent follows his or her own style of parenting. Whatever works effectively is the style that works, but here are the main parenting styles that the society follows:

  • Some parents are indulgent and they are quite permissive and nondirective, so they are more lenient with rules. They do this because they want to encourage self-regulation but also because they want to avoid actual confrontation with their children.
  • There are parents that are authoritative and they long to maintain democracy and balance in the home so they give the children an equal opportunity to fend for themselves, while still under their guidance, to be able to achieve complete maturity.
  • There are also authoritarian they always want to be in charge. They are strict and their rules can sometimes be unreasonable. Their word is the last say and they are the authority.
  • The worst will be the uninvolved parents. These are parents who exist as mere sperm and egg donors to the child and may even be the source of their financial support, but they leave their children alone, to make decisions for themselves, even if it will harm them.
